BOB ROBERTS (TAI’R FELIN)
Bob Roberts was a miller by trade, and singing to him was as natural as breathing; he had a large repertoire of traditional songs and ballads, learnt from his parents, peers and friends, but his singing was confined by and large to his own locality, a part of his community’s way of life. But when he was in his 70s, he was ‘discovered’ by an enterprising BBC producer called Sam Jones of Bangor, and he became for Welsh-language radio audiences an overnight star following his performances on the ‘Noson Lawen’ series.
There followed a constant round of concerts throughout Wales, and Bob was the undoubted star, hounded by the ladies for his autograph; Bob-mania preceded Beatle-mania by almost two decades! The reason for his popularity is almost impossible to appreciate in these days of X-Factor entertainment, but he did have the voice, the stage presence, and a captivating mix of impishness and poignancy which never failed to work.
His best recorded tracks are available on SAIN SCD 2608.
