CARREG LAFAR formed in Cardiff in 1993 with ANTWN, JAMES, RHIAN and SIMON O’SHEA. Carreg Lafar literally means a speaking stone, or echo stone. Linda joined the band in 1994 and completed the line up.
In the summer of 1996 the band played their first major festival at Lorient, Brittany, representing Wales at the Interceltic Festival. Ten days of performances was a great success culminating in the band supporting the Dan Ar Braz concert ‘Heritage of the Celts’ to an audience of 10,000 people. In 1997 they released their ‘YSBRYD Y WERIN’ album on the SAIN label in North America, and launched the album with a two-week tour of the States. Since then, they’ve returned to North America on several occasions, as well as a weekend trip to Atlanta.
The band made two videos following the release of their second album ‘HYN’ in 1997, which was featured on S4C. They also received rave reviews in all the major folk and roots music magazines in the UK and North America.
In 1999 Simon left the band to concentrate on his visual art practice, and DYLAN DAVIES a well-known singer and writer in Wales joined Carreg Lafar as the new guitarist. The band returned to Lorient again to represent Wales at the Interceltic Festival.
As ‘HYN’ was released in North America in May 2000, the album was launched with a very successful three-week tour of Canada and America.
‘PROFIAD’, their third album was launched at Lorient Interceltic Festival, Year of Wales, in 2002 with live performances on TV Breizh and Radio Breizh and sell-out concerts.
