RICHARD REES

Biography

The farmer form Pennal in Meirionnydd had one of the finest bass voices ever heard in Wales. He first came to prominence when he won the Blue Riband at the National Eisteddfod in Aberystwyth in 1952 and three years later in Pwllheli.

Many predicted a glittering career as a professional opera singer, but although he did become a principal singer at the Welsh National Opera for a time, he declined all offers to turn professional, preferring instead to stay with his farm on the mountains of Meirionnydd.

But he travelled extensively across Wales and beyond and captivated audiences for close on three decades and became one of Wales’ best-known singers.
