BRENDA EDWARDS - MOR O HEN ATGOFION
The blind country singer from Anglesey with a new collection of her favourite songs.
Brenda Edwards has always “sang in the dark” as she was BORN BLIND, but her humour and “no fuss” attitude is a lesson to each and every one of us. There are no such words as sentimentality and self-pity in her vocabulary. All her songs are about love and affection, sang in the true country music spirit. Brenda recorded her first single which appeared on a SAIN collection back in 1977.
The Welsh song “Canu yn y tywyllwch” (Singing in the dark) was played continuously on national radio stations, and she was frequently invited to perform at clubs and pubs around North Wales, where she still has a unique rapport with her live audience.
A native of Gwalchmai on Anglesey, Brenda attended a school for the blind at Bridgend. “I can cope with everything,” she said, “from doing the fire to cook and knit Aran jumpers! I have the knitting patterns in Braille as well as simple instructions on how to use the washing machine and music notes for my songs.” Music has always been important to her. She composes English lyrics and music and is interested in all aspect of country music. “I always have someone to translate my songs to Welsh. I have a collection of over a thousand of English albums, and my favourite Welsh artists are Broc Mr and Iona and Andy.” She taught herself how to sing and her dream is to visit Nashville. “Unfortunately I am afraid of flying, but a gulp of Brandy could settle my nerves!”
Lliwen Griffiths is the accompanist on this album. She has also recorded backing tracks for Brenda’s pub and club performances. Brenda sings a duet with David Bullock on one track. Twelve of the songs are in Welsh, which include a few adaptations of familiar songs like Myfanwy. Brenda has also included three familiar English songs such as Baby Blues, Then he kissed me and Before the next teardrop falls.
