Côrdydd sing new Welsh translations of John Rutter’s Requiem and other sacred pieces with Elin Manahan Thomas (soprano){tracks 3 + 7}
Musical Director: Sioned James
Organ: Huw Tregelles Williams
Côrdydd was formed in 2000 when a group of friends came together to enjoy singing and socializing. The rehearsals attracted many of the young citizens of Cardiff, and the choir grew in size and popularity.
Since its inception, the choir has
Ø won the BBC Radio Cymru Choir of the Year award in 2003
Ø performed The Messiah with the Baroque Orchestra of Wales
Ø toured Barbados and Hong Kong
Ø performed Verdi’s Requiem as part of a massed choir with the BBC Choir and National Orchestra of Wales
Ø performed Brahms’ Requiem with the Swansea Bach choir
Ø won the mixed choir with under 45 voices three times at the National Eisteddfod of Wales
This CD of John Rutter’s choral works is the culmination of months of preparation during 2007, and we trust it will be a fitting record of the choir’s youthful exuberance and lyrical sound.
“I am delighted to welcome Côrdydd’s recording of my Requiem and various of my shorter sacred pieces. This is the first recording in Welsh of my music, and it is splendid that such a fine award-winning choir has chosen it for their first CD. The flowing and beautiful sound of the language suits the music to perfection, and will, I hope, touch the hearts of many music-lovers in Wales and beyond.
I am especially happy that Elin Manahan Thomas is the soprano soloist in the Requiem. I have known her lovely singing ever since she was a member of the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, and I can think of no singer more appropriate for the role. My personal greetings and thanks to all who have contributed to this significant venture. I wish it every success.” John Rutter
As well as the Requiem, the choir sings other sacred music by John Rutter.
