Leila Megane was the professional name of Margaret Jones, born in Bethesda in 1891 and who later lived in Pwllheli, Caernarfon and London.
Her mother died when she was nine, and she lost her father twelve years later. Leila became dependent on strong personalities such as David Lloyd George, her voice tutor Jean de Reszke and her first husband, the Welsh musician T.Osborne Roberts. He was the author of many of Leila’s most memorable songs.
Her professional career, which was beginning to capture the imagination of the world, was cut short by the First World War, and she returned to Wales to live in comparative obscurity. But the memory of her concerts, which persisted for some year in Wales, remain as does the sound of her rich and expressive voice. The appeal of that unique voice is captured on these original tracks, digitally enhanced.
